Overall rating: Good

Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We avoid) to 5 (Great) How we rate

Our “Planet” rating evaluates brands based on the environmental policies in their supply chains, from carbon emissions to wastewater, ingredients' impacts, product circularity, and more. Here we rate Lush “Good”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It uses some lower-impact ingredients including certified organic ingredients.
  • It’s set a science based target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both its direct operations and supply chain but there’s no evidence it is on track.
  • It recycles product packaging and discloses the amount.
  • It implements water reduction initiatives in some of its supply chain.
  • It's published a comprehensive environmental sourcing policy for palm oil.

Workers’ rights are central to our “People” rating, which assesses brands’ policies and practices on everything from child labour to living wages and gender equality. Here we rate Lush “It's a Start”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • Much of its final stage is located in lower-risk countries or certified facilities.
  • Its Code of Conduct covers ILO Four Fundamental Freedoms principles.
  • It provides modern slavery awareness training for its suppliers.
  • It has an internal grievance mechanism for workers in its supply chain to anonymously report concerns like harassment and unpaid wages.
  • It audits some of its suppliers but does not specify what proportion.
  • It ensures some workers in the final production stage are paid living wages, though not through its entire supply chain.

Note that the "People" rating in Good On You’s methodology is defined by labour rights and does not consider consumer health.

Brands’ animal welfare policies and, where applicable, how well they trace their animal-derived products, are the focus of our “Animals” rating. Here we rate Lush “Great”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It uses ingredients derived from insects (eg byproducts of the bee, snail and/or silk industries), but no other animal substances.
  • It's certified as animal test-free by PETA.

Based on all the publicly available information we’ve reviewed, we rate Lush “Good” overall.
